Ford continues its farm-to-car mission this year with a groundbreaking partnership with Jose Cuervo®.
No, this has nothing to do with the classic "lime squeeze" Ford Fiesta's resemblance to a margarita -- but in the near future, the Fiesta may share some ingredients with one!
To make their tequila, Jose Cuervo grows millions of agave plants each year. The rugged desert-dwelling plants are then harvested, roasted, and pressed to release their sweet sap. The sap goes on to be fermented and distilled into tequila, while the rest of the plant... Well, it is sometimes used for fertilizer, or for specialty paper crafts.
Jose Cuervo was looking for a better way to use the leftover plant fiber, and Ford Motor Company is always on the lookout for durable renewable materials that could become part of new vehicles.
According to Ford's sustainability researchers, the agave fiber shows promise for having the heat-resistant and aesthetic properties needed to make composite bioplastics, which could reduce vehicle weight and lower petroleum use.
